Had one for several years now and its never let me down!Reasonably quiet, and very fast. I have my drive in a RAID configuration, so one drive is mirrored to the other automatically. Ive noticed no drop in speed etc and the unit takes care of the backing up well. Works perfectly in Windows. Currently use the drive with the Firewire 800 interface with my MacBook Pro. Its main use is for video editing, and the drive performs perfectly. The only down side is that if you are a MAC user, you can set up and use the drive fine, but the software that manages the RAID array (WD RAID Manager) does not seem to work very well with MAC systems. The software runs fine, so you can use it for the initial setup, but it seems to play about with the system memory in strange ways. Hence once the drive was set up I removed the software asap. If teh RAID array fails the drive will light up to inform you, in which case you can stick the software back on to... I use both as a backup for Time Machine for a Mac.I was delighted that by using the Firewire 800 cable I can daisy-chain this to the original 2TB one. It is quiet and just gets on with the job. I'm not regretting it at all, speeds seem perfect via firewire 800, even while time machine is backing up i can still edit without any issues, i have it running in RAID1 (splitting it into 2 2TB drives both identical) and i couldn't be happier with it. Also the speed difference between RAID0 and RAID1 is not at all noticeable, i've looked at some benchmarks and the difference between to 2 is about 1MB/s which is nothing really.Only problem i have had was with HDNL as they mucked up my delivery and lost the package, luckily amazon's customer service is top notch and they not only had the problem sorted quickly but also extended my prime membership by an extra month as an apology for the mess up. Couldnt be more satisfied. |
